Does life feel like it is on repeat?
Lately I have been listening to Chappell Roan…a lot. There is a lot of great things as our kids get older but one of them is the introduction to new Artists.
The song Femininomenon makes me happy.
The lyrics that catch me though are:
Stuck in the suburbs,
You’re folding his laundry
You got what you wanted, so stop feeling sorry.
Despite even having the conversation when we first were married as to who was going to be responsible for what, the laundry was mine.
Many, many times it felt like I could drown in it.
I felt guilt when I complained. Compared to my grandmother I had it positively easy. She had a twin tub, and my memories were all of her shifting water from one side to the other. It was very hands on. I remember her telling me how much easier it was for her, than her mum.
She was literally washing it all by hand.
Here is the rub.
Sometimes changing how we think about something can be very helpful.
But at the same time, we are allowed to resent it.
The older I get the more I see that we can have both.
We can be both.
We can be deeply grateful for things like… our washing machine.
And we can simultaneously be annoyed that the task may always fall to us {perhaps for you it is some different repeating task}. For me, with the six of us. It was truly relentless.
We had two kids allergic to dust mites, and anyone who has that in their lives know that means endless washing of sheets to keep the allergic response under control.
Eventually, I found peace with feeling both.
Annoyed and grateful.
And as fast as I could I taught the kids how to use the machines.
So maybe Chappell Roan isn’t totally right.
Maybe we are allowed to feel all the feels.
Maybe we got what we wanted; it ended up sucking a bit {ok a lot sometimes}. But there’s lots to be grateful for too.
We can be feeling sorry and grateful.
We are all the things.
With love,
